Pete’s only formal art education was up to the first year of art A-Level in the 1970/71 academic year. The classes concentrated on landscapes, portraits and still life which didn’t interest him very much. Towards the end of that academic year, he discovered the mid to late ‘60s works of Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely, and was inspired to start painting geometric abstract paintings that dazzled the viewers eyes. As the A-Level course wasn’t based on that style of art, he left, and found himself working as a civil servant, while continuing to paint as a hobby.

His first exhibition was at The Old Town Hall, Hemel Hempstead in March 1980. Since then, he has had many solo exhibitions and has exhibited in many group shows, including at London’s Brick Lane Gallery and the Royal Academy Summer Show. He is also represented in Belgium by The Nicholson Art Gallery in Brussels and has buyers of his work in France, the United States and Canada as well as the UK.

His paintings explore the optical effects of linear distortion and arithmetical progression. The patterns and colours used are carefully selected to create either an optical illusion of movement, or to create a feeling of tension on the surface of the painting.

Some paintings have been used as covers for an ongoing series of limited edition 12’’ vinyl LPs by the German record label Drone Records as well as other releases. View his works by heading to the website above where prints can be purchased.

Pete displays his art at a local exhibition in Hemel Hempstead where he changes his display on a regular basis, so there is always something new to see there. You can visit the exhibition on Fridays and  Saturdays (10:00 am to 5:00 pm) and Sundays (11:00 am to 4:00 pm). It is inside Hemel Hempstead’s main shopping mall, not far from the Marks and Spencer end (address to follow)
