First class degree success for Old Columbans
Thursday, 30 July 2020
In a stunning double for St Columba's College, a former Head Boy and Deputy Head Boy have both been awarded First Class Honours university degrees in the same week.

James Gamblin (OC 2017) was awarded a BA (Hons), First Class in Theology from the University of Cambridge and Ben Scott (OC 2017) received a BA (Hons), First Class in Classics from the University of Exeter.

James and Ben served as Head Boy and Deputy Head Boy at the school in 2016 - 2017, and they both cherish their time at St Columba's. 'St Columba's made me who I am' says Ben. He also credits the Sixth Form seminar classes as key preparation for university studies.

'What I valued most was that the teachers really breathed life into the subjects I was studying' says James.

Mr David Buxton, Headmaster of St Columba's College said: 'We are delighted by James and Ben's achievements. I have no doubt they will go on to do great things in the world.'

Both Old Columbans plan to undertake further studies - Ben hopes to achieve an ACA accountancy qualification and James is planning to study for a BA in Jurisprudence with Senior Status at the University of Oxford.

The Gamblin family has also been celebrating the achievements of James's older brother Edward (OC 2015). He received a First Class MEng degree from Imperial College London also in the same week.
